Diagnostic Microbiology and Culture Technique

Reliable microbiology results depend on technique that is often assumed rather than actually taught, from aseptic transfer to correct incubation and reading of cultures. This course rebuilds those fundamentals for laboratories serving clinical, food safety, and water testing needs across East and Southern Africa. Participants practice specimen processing, media selection, and organism identification using both conventional and rapid methods.

Course objectives

  • Apply aseptic technique consistently across specimen handling and culture work
  • Select appropriate culture media for common bacterial and fungal targets
  • Perform Gram staining and basic biochemical identification tests
  • Interpret antimicrobial susceptibility testing results using standard breakpoints
  • Maintain quality control of media, reagents, and reference cultures

Who should attend

  • Medical laboratory scientists and microbiology technicians
  • Food safety and water testing microbiologists
  • Veterinary and animal health laboratory staff
  • Laboratory supervisors responsible for microbiology quality control
