A clinical laboratory result changes what happens to a patient, which makes the pre analytical stage the laboratory does not control the largest source of error it is blamed for. This course covers the whole path. Delegates work through specimen collection, handling and the rejection criteria that protect a result, and the haematology bench including counts, differentials and the film review that automation cannot replace. Clinical chemistry follows: analyser principles, calibration, and the interferences that produce a plausible wrong answer. Immunoassay work is covered. Quality control and the Westgard style rules that decide whether a run is released are addressed. Critical results and the communication obligation attaching to them follow. The course closes on turnaround, on interpreting a result against reference intervals, and on when to repeat.
